Welcome to Heirloom Onions

A Division of Mulberry Woods Nursery

The goal of Heirloom Onions is the preservation, propagation, and reintroduction of unusual and often culturally significant Allium varieties that have–or have almost–disappeared from the market. The onions we grow are perennials, meaning that they can be harvested and replanted every year, or that they can be left in the ground to re-sprout in the summer or fall. Many Allium species have also been incorporated into the ornamental garden because of their easy care and all around good looks. This means you can have your onions, enjoy them, and eat them too!

Heirloom Onions is a project of Mulberry Woods Native Plant Nursery located in Garden City, Alabama. We are as concerned with eco-gastronomy–the survival of heirloom vegetables and herbs–as we are with native plants, given the greed-driven corporate onslaught with which all naturally living, self sustaining, things are faced. Our alliums are raised with only natural fertilizers and other sustainable products. We do not drench our plants with synthetic chemicals or fungicides, nor do we feed them with a constant drip of chemical fertilizer and water. We also do not grow plants in a non-sustainable peat based medium. Finally, you will never see any GMO items, trademarked, or patented plants on any of our websites.

Our shopping cart can be used to order any plants or bulbs safely and securely via Paypal, or you can use our printable Mail Order Form from Mulberry Woods Nursery–just hit the print command in your web browser–the header will not print, just the form. As we sell plants as well as bulbs, many varieties of alliums are available for order year round.

PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT AVAILABILITY WILL BE EXTREMELY LIMITED FOR THE NEXT FEW YEARS. IF YOU REALLY REALLY WANT AN ITEM YOU SHOULD PRE-ORDER TO ASSURE DELIVERY–JUST INCLUDE A NOTE WHEN PRE-ORDERING OUT OF STOCK ITEMS. IN STOCK ALLIUMS CAN BE ORDERED AT ANY TIME. WE ALSO HAVE MANY NEW ITEMS IN PRODUCTION, ESPECIALLY WILD SPECIES OF ETHNOBOTANICALLY IMPORTANT EDIBLE ALLIUMS THAT ARE RARELY IF EVER AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE (WE WILL PRE-LIST THESE IN THE RIGHT SIDEBAR OR ON THE PROJECTS PAGE. THEY ARE THE ONES THAT CANNOT BE HIGHLIGHTED WITH A CURSOR). CHECK BACK AGAIN WHENEVER THE HUNGER STRIKES.

Never Be Without Fresh Onions

Heirloom onion varieties think that 2×2=20. That’s how perennial multiplying onions multiply. As often stated, these are the onions to grow if you never ever want to run out of onions again. Harvest and replant every year or just leave them in the ground to multiply, though they will need an occasional division to avoid overcrowding and to keep the bulb size at maximum. We like to classify these by species and variety (see the right sidebar), as a way of illustrating their lineage and heritage.

Health Warning

Consuming fresh heirloom onions can become addictive. Eating massive quantities of the above can possibly cause health problems, in the same way that inhaling too much dihydrogen monoxide can lead to drowning (that dihydrogen stuff is H2O, by the way). If you are allergic to onions then don’t eat them. If it hurts when you do that, don’t do it.

“Their younger recruits, who, having nothing in them of the feelings or principles of ’76, now look to a splendid government of an aristocracy, founded on banking institutions, and monied incorporations under the guise and cloak of their favored branches of manufactures, commerce, and navigation, riding and ruling over the plundered ploughman and beggared yeomanry.”–Thomas Jefferson, 1825.
